The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has flagged a growing threat of cyber offences in Himachal Pradesh, with a significant rise in cases reported in 2022. According to the report, the state witnessed a 33% increase in cybercrime cases compared to the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures.
Key Findings from the NCRB Report
The NCRB data reveals that Himachal Pradesh registered 1,234 cases of cybercrime in 2022, up from 928 in 2021. The majority of cases involved online fraud, including phishing, identity theft, and financial scams. The report also noted a rise in cases of cyberstalking and harassment, particularly targeting women and minors.
Regional Disparities
Urban areas, including Shimla and Solan, accounted for a higher number of cases, but rural regions are also increasingly vulnerable. The report underscores that cybercriminals are exploiting the growing digital penetration in the state, especially in remote areas where awareness about online safety is limited.
Expert Reactions and Recommendations
Cybersecurity experts have expressed concern over the trend and called for immediate action. Dr. Anil Sharma, a cybersecurity analyst, emphasized the need for public awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of cyber laws. “The state must invest in cyber forensics and training for law enforcement agencies to tackle this menace effectively,” he said.
The Himachal Pradesh government has acknowledged the issue and announced plans to set up a dedicated cybercrime unit. Additionally, the state is collaborating with the central government to implement the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and strengthen digital infrastructure.
Preventive Measures for Citizens
To protect themselves, residents are advised to follow basic cybersecurity practices:
- Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible.
- Avoid sharing personal information on unverified websites.
- Report suspicious activities to the cybercrime helpline at 1930.
The NCRB report serves as a wake-up call for Himachal Pradesh to bolster its cyber defenses. As digital adoption accelerates, proactive measures are essential to safeguard citizens from the growing threat of cyber offences.
