A 25-year-old software engineer from Kothapet, Hyderabad, was extorted of Rs 2.51 lakh by fraudsters who recorded his nude video during a WhatsApp video call with a woman he met on a dating app. The Malkajgiri cybercrime police registered a case on Monday following the victim's complaint.
How the Scam Unfolded
According to police, the victim received a request on a dating app on April 18 from a woman identifying herself as Siksha. She later moved the conversation to WhatsApp. During a video call on the same day, the woman appeared nude and coerced the victim to do the same. Unbeknownst to him, the interaction was recorded without his consent.
Blackmail and Extortion
The fraudsters then forced the victim to access a Telegram account, which compromised all his phone contacts. They threatened to circulate the nude video among his contacts and initially extorted Rs 65,000. Despite the payment, the blackmail continued, and the victim was forced to take out loans from various apps to meet their demands.
Police said the victim made multiple transactions totaling Rs 2.51 lakh on April 26. When he refused to pay more, the accused shared his nude video with some of his contacts.
Legal Action
Based on the victim's complaint, the Malkajgiri cybercrime police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act on Monday. Investigations are ongoing.
