In a novel initiative to combat the rising tide of online fraud, the Uttar Pradesh Police has turned to cinema. The force released a cybercrime awareness short film titled 'Scam Files' on its official social media platforms on Thursday. The film, which runs for 5 minutes and 27 seconds, features veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar and is based on a recent real-life incident from Kanpur.
Star Power for a Serious Message
The film is directed by Raj Shandilya, while the script has been penned by Rahul Srivastava, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) to Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna. The narrative is inspired by an actual case where an alert citizen successfully thwarted a cyber fraud attempt carried out in the name of a 'digital arrest'. The film was shot at multiple locations across Mumbai.
In 'Scam Files', Nana Patekar plays the role of the vigilant common man. Actor Leena Sharma portrays his wife, while Kishore Soni enacts the part of a fraudulent cyber inspector. The role of a genuine police inspector is played by Adil Irani.
Campaign Against Cyber Crime
This film is a key component of the ongoing public awareness campaign launched by DGP Rajeev Krishna. Upon taking charge as the state police chief in July, curbing cyber crime was listed among his top 11 priorities. He had tasked senior IPS officers with educating the public about cyber crimes, their prevention, and ensuring quick relief for victims.
The short film demonstrates, in a simple and engaging manner, how such frauds are executed and outlines clear ways to prevent them. A crucial message it drives home is that there is no legal provision called "digital arrest" in India. Any threatening phone call, video call, or demand for online payment under this pretext is a definite indicator of a cyber fraud attempt.
The film will be screened in all cinema halls across Uttar Pradesh to maximize its reach, in addition to being available on all UP Police social media handles, including YouTube, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
A Legacy of Awareness Films
This is not the first time the Uttar Pradesh Police has collaborated with Bollywood to spread awareness. Previously, they have produced short films on online fraud and internet addiction featuring stars like Ajay Devgn, Rajkummar Rao, Taapsee Pannu, and Triptii Dimri.
For instance, a film with Ajay Devgn and Taapsee Pannu highlighted the adverse effects of internet addiction. Another featuring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri warned citizens about the dangers of sharing OTPs. Ahead of Mahakumbh 2025, a short film starring Shashi Verma was broadcast to alert people about hotel accommodation scams.
DGP Krishna has also been actively involved, having participated in 11 zonal-level cyber awareness workshops that have sensitized over one lakh people, including students, business community members, and public representatives from more than 25 districts.
A police spokesperson stated, "This initiative of Uttar Pradesh Police is a significant step towards increasing societal awareness about cyber crimes, empowering citizens, and creating a safe digital environment." With 'Scam Files', the police aim to use the power of storytelling and star appeal to make a tangible impact in the fight against digital deception.
