Vizag Couple Loses ₹1.5 Crore in Digital Arrest Fraud

Visakhapatnam: An elderly couple in Vizag city lost nearly ₹1.5 crore in yet another digital arrest fraud, where cybercriminals exploit fear by impersonating officials and threatening arrest.

How the Scam Unfolded

The 75-year-old retired government employee, living with his wife, was targeted after fraudsters claimed his Aadhaar-linked mobile number and bank account were used for illegal activities. In April, he first received a call from a man posing as a telecom department legal advisor. Soon after, WhatsApp calls followed from impersonators claiming to be a Bengaluru police inspector, an Enforcement Directorate (ED) director, and even a CBI officer. They alleged his accounts were linked to crimes such as human trafficking, warned his house was under surveillance, and ordered him to keep the matter confidential.

Extortion Tactics

The callers insisted he not leave home without permission and demanded money transfers to verify his income. Terrified, the couple sent nearly ₹1.5 crore in three to four instalments. Despite receiving the funds, the fraudsters continued to harass and demand more, citing ongoing investigation. Unable to bear the threats, the couple finally confided in their daughter, who recognized the scam and urged them to approach the Vizag cyber-crime police. A complaint was lodged, detailing how the fraudsters manipulated fear and trust to extort money.

Police Warning for Seniors

Police said senior citizens are increasingly vulnerable to such scams due to their trusting nature, limited digital awareness, loneliness when children live elsewhere, and financial stability. Officials warned that cybercrooks are exploiting these factors to target the elderly, urging families to remain vigilant and educate seniors about digital frauds.
