The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is embarking on a transformative technological upgrade for the country's highway infrastructure. In a significant move toward data-driven management, the authority plans to deploy AI-based dashcam systems across approximately 40,000 kilometers of Indian roads. This initiative marks a shift from reactive maintenance to proactive, intelligent monitoring of highway conditions.

Route Patrol Vehicles to Conduct Weekly Surveys with Advanced Cameras

According to official reports, specialized Route Patrol Vehicles will be equipped with high-definition dashboard cameras to conduct comprehensive weekly surveys of all major highway stretches. These cameras will capture detailed images and videos, which will then be analyzed by artificial intelligence models capable of identifying over 30 distinct types of defects and anomalies. The primary objective is to automate the detection process, thereby minimizing reliance on manual inspections and enhancing efficiency.

AI Models to Detect Pavement Issues and Prevent Hazards

A major focus of the AI system will be pavement condition assessment. The technology is designed to automatically identify problems such as potholes, rutting, and severe cracks using advanced machine learning algorithms. Experts suggest that early detection of these issues could substantially reduce long-term maintenance costs and prevent sudden road hazards that endanger motorists. The system is also expected to track repair progress over time, ensuring accountability and timely interventions.

Comprehensive Monitoring Beyond Road Surface

The AI dashcam system extends its surveillance beyond just the road surface. To ensure round-the-clock safety, NHAI plans to conduct at least one monthly nighttime survey for each highway stretch. Officials believe that incorporating night data will significantly improve safety for drivers who travel after dark, addressing a critical aspect of highway management.

Data Management Through Zonal IT Solutions and Dashboards

To effectively handle the vast amounts of data generated by this initiative, NHAI will subdivide the country into five monitoring zones. Each zone will have a dedicated IT solution to process data, run AI analytics, and display results via interactive dashboards. This structured approach will facilitate side-by-side analysis of road conditions, enabling officials to track maintenance progress seamlessly. The AI-generated results will be integrated into NHAI's Data Lake solution, ensuring centralized and accessible information for informed decision-making.
