The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has announced plans to extend its door-to-door waste collection service to seven villages and Sector 63, marking a significant expansion of the city's waste management network. This initiative is part of the corporation's ongoing efforts to improve sanitation and ensure proper disposal of solid waste across all areas of the city.
Details of the Expansion
The seven villages that will be covered under the scheme include Kaimbwala, Khuda Jassu, Khuda Ali Sher, Raipur Kalan, Raipur Khurd, Mauli Jagran, and Hallomajra. Additionally, Sector 63, which is a relatively new residential sector, will also be included in the waste collection route. The decision was taken during a recent meeting of the corporation's solid waste management committee.
Implementation Plan
The corporation will deploy dedicated waste collection vehicles and staff to these areas. Residents will be provided with separate bins for wet and dry waste, as per the guidelines of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The collection will be carried out on a daily basis, with special attention to bulk waste generators such as commercial establishments and apartment complexes.
Expected Benefits
This expansion is expected to benefit approximately 50,000 residents living in these areas. It will help in reducing illegal dumping and open burning of waste, which are common practices in the absence of formal collection services. The move is also likely to improve the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards in these localities.
The Municipal Corporation has urged residents to cooperate with the waste collectors and segregate waste at source. Non-compliance may result in penalties as per the existing bylaws. The corporation also plans to conduct awareness campaigns to educate residents about the importance of waste segregation and proper disposal.
This initiative is part of the larger Smart City Mission under which Chandigarh is implementing various sustainable waste management practices. The city has already achieved 100% door-to-door waste collection in its main sectors and is now focusing on the peripheral areas.
With this expansion, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation aims to achieve complete coverage of waste collection services across the entire city, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all citizens.
