Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday that Google is actively exploring investment opportunities in India across artificial intelligence infrastructure, server manufacturing, and drone production. The minister made the statement via a post on social media platform X, sharing that the tech giant is evaluating multiple avenues to expand its footprint in the country.
Push for Localization
During the announcement, Vaishnaw urged global technology companies, including Google, to localize the production of servers, graphics processing units (GPUs), and chips within India. This call aligns with the government's broader strategy to boost domestic manufacturing under initiatives such as Make in India and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The minister emphasized that localizing these critical components would not only reduce import dependency but also position India as a key hub for high-tech manufacturing.
AI Infrastructure Development
Google's potential investment in AI infrastructure comes at a time when India is witnessing rapid digital transformation. The company is reportedly looking at setting up data centers and AI research facilities to support the growing demand for cloud services and machine learning applications. With the government's push for responsible AI adoption, such investments could accelerate innovation in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and education.
Server and Drone Manufacturing
In addition to AI, Google is exploring the manufacturing of servers and drones in India. Servers are essential for cloud computing and data storage, while drones have wide-ranging applications in logistics, agriculture, surveillance, and disaster management. Local production of these devices would create jobs, foster skill development, and strengthen the supply chain ecosystem.
Vaishnaw's statement comes on the heels of several global tech firms announcing expansion plans in India.
