ISRO Maps Every Indian Village from Space for Better Governance

In a significant development for India, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has mapped every village in the country from space. The satellite data will play a crucial role in supporting gram panchayats with decentralised planning, asset monitoring, and improving grassroots governance.

High-Resolution Mapping Completed

On National Panchayati Raj Day, ISRO announced the completion of high-resolution land use and land cover mapping for the entire nation at a scale of 1:10000. This means that one centimetre on the map represents just 100 metres on the ground, providing enough detail to distinguish a paddy field from a pond. According to the 2011 Census, India has 649,481 villages.

Data Available for Government Organisations

ISRO has made this satellite data accessible to government organisations. The agency posted on X: "This dataset supports gram panchayat development plans and is integrated as one of the information layers on the Grammanchitra (village map) web portal of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, enabling stronger, data-driven governance at the grassroots." The Grammanchitra portal is designed to help local bodies make informed development decisions.

Benefits for Rural Development

The mapping of villages will facilitate effective preparation of gram panchayat development plans, enable data-driven decision-making, and assist in identifying land resources and usage patterns. Ultimately, it will enhance transparency and accountability in the implementation of government projects in rural India.

Part of a Larger Initiative

This effort is part of a broader initiative to leverage satellite imagery, including data from ISRO's Bhuvan geoportal, for disaster management, agricultural planning, and infrastructure development across rural and remote areas. ISRO's comprehensive mapping of all villages is expected to significantly strengthen grassroots democracy.
