Central Railway Set to Achieve Historic Milestone with AC Local Expansion
In a significant development for Mumbai's commuters, Central Railway is poised to cross a major threshold by scaling up its air-conditioned suburban services to 108 daily trips by the end of April. This expansion marks the first time AC local trains will operate over 100 services daily, representing a substantial upgrade to the city's public transportation infrastructure.
Substantial Increase in AC Services Across Key Routes
The railway authority plans to add 12 to 14 new services, boosting the current count from 94 to 108 daily AC trips. This enhancement will particularly benefit the CSMT–Panvel harbour line, which will see additional AC services following their initial introduction earlier this year. Currently, AC suburban trains operate on two primary corridors: the CSMT–Kalyan main line and the CSMT–Panvel harbour route, both covering some of Mumbai's most heavily traveled commuter stretches.
New Rake Arrival to Boost Summer Capacity
A critical component of this expansion is the imminent arrival of a new AC local rake currently being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory. Expected to reach Mumbai by April-end, this additional rake will help meet rising passenger demand during the peak summer months when comfortable travel becomes increasingly essential.
Current Fleet and Ridership StatisticsCentral Railway currently operates 7 AC local rakes that collectively run 94 services daily. Despite the planned expansion, the network will still trail Western Railway, which operates 133 AC services daily. However, the gap will narrow to approximately 25 services, representing meaningful progress toward parity.
Ridership data reveals interesting patterns: daily passenger numbers on AC locals stand at around 1.06 lakh on Central Railway compared to 1.75 lakh on Western Railway, indicating higher demand on the western corridor. Nevertheless, the harbour line alone sees approximately 4,471 tickets sold daily, translating to nearly 40,000 passengers, demonstrating growing acceptance of air-conditioned travel options.
Long-Term Vision for Mumbai's Suburban Network
Looking beyond immediate expansion, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has already floated tenders for 238 AC local rakes as part of a comprehensive long-term upgrade plan. While large-scale rollout of these additional rakes is projected for 2030, the current expansion represents an important step toward modernizing Mumbai's suburban railway system and improving commuter comfort across the metropolitan region.
This strategic enhancement of AC services comes at a crucial time as Mumbai continues to develop its public transportation infrastructure to better serve its millions of daily commuters.
