Mumbai Commissioner Orders Innovative Cleanliness Measures

Mumbai municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide carried out a surprise early morning inspection of the city and eastern suburbs on Wednesday to assess sanitation work. She directed the administration to implement innovative ideas from citizens associations, service-oriented organizations, and housing societies, and to seek guidance from institutions like the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for keeping the city clean.

Mapping Densely Populated Areas

Bhide instructed the administration to map densely populated settlements and slums in each ward where large quantities of waste are generated. She emphasized the need for micro-observation of such areas and the creation of a geographic information system (GIS) to monitor them effectively.

Waste Collection Framework and Surveillance

The commissioner directed that a framework for waste collection on every road in each ward be prepared. A record of waste collected by designated organizations must be maintained, and a model should be developed based on this data. Additionally, Bhide ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at locations where waste is dumped, on a pilot basis, for surveillance purposes.
