TRAI to Conduct Seminar in Jaipur on Digital Connectivity Ratings for Buildings

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to organize a half-day seminar focused on the 'Rating of Buildings for Digital Connectivity' at the Rajasthan International Centre on Tuesday. This event aims to drive the adoption of TRAI's newly introduced regulatory framework across various sectors, including residential, commercial, and public areas.

Details of the New Regulatory Framework

The framework, which was officially notified on October 25, 2024, applies to a wide range of properties such as residential complexes, government buildings, commercial spaces, public areas, stadiums, and transport corridors. Under this system, buildings will be rated on a scale from one star to five stars, with the highest rating indicating superior readiness for digital connectivity. This initiative comes in response to the increasing indoor internet usage and the rapid expansion of 4G and 5G networks across the country.

Key Parameters for Rating Buildings

The regulations establish a transparent and technology-neutral system to evaluate how well buildings are equipped for seamless digital connectivity. The rating will be based on several critical parameters, including:

  • Fibre readiness and infrastructure
  • In-building mobile coverage and signal strength
  • Availability and quality of Wi-Fi networks
  • Broadband speeds and reliability
  • Overall user experience and accessibility

This comprehensive assessment is designed to help buyers, tenants, and businesses make more informed decisions when selecting properties. Additionally, it encourages developers and builders to incorporate robust digital infrastructure right from the design and construction stages.

Importance of Reliable Indoor Connectivity

TRAI officials have emphasized that reliable indoor connectivity has become increasingly critical as governance, essential services, and business operations continue to shift online. With most data consumption now occurring indoors, ensuring high-quality digital infrastructure in buildings is paramount for economic growth and societal development.

Expected Participation and Goals

The seminar is anticipated to attract around 150 to 200 delegates, including representatives from urban local bodies, planning departments, telecom companies, infrastructure providers, hotel groups, and academic institutions. The primary objective of this event is to build awareness and foster wider adoption of the rating system specifically within the state of Rajasthan, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.

By promoting this framework, TRAI aims to create a standardized approach to digital connectivity that enhances the quality of life, supports business efficiency, and drives technological advancement across India's urban and rural landscapes.
