Apple Introduces Upgraded AirTag with Significant Performance Enhancements
Apple has officially launched the second-generation AirTag, marking a substantial upgrade to its popular Bluetooth tracking accessory that first debuted in 2021. The new device maintains the familiar compact metal design but incorporates several key improvements that enhance its functionality for users tracking personal items like wallets, keys, and luggage.
Enhanced Technical Specifications and Pricing
The updated AirTag features Apple's latest Ultra Wideband chip, identical to the technology found in recent iPhone and Apple Watch models. This advancement enables a 50% longer tracking range compared to the previous generation, allowing users to locate lost items from significantly greater distances. Additionally, the device now includes a louder speaker that can be heard from up to twice the distance, making it easier to find misplaced belongings through audible alerts.
In terms of availability, the new AirTag is priced at Rs 3790 for a single unit and Rs 12900 for a four-pack in the Indian market. Apple has discontinued the first-generation model immediately, with the upgraded version becoming available for purchase later this week.
Expanded Compatibility and Functionality
For the first time, Apple has enabled Apple Watch compatibility with the AirTag ecosystem. Users can now locate their AirTags directly from an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or later models, providing additional convenience beyond iPhone tracking. The device continues to integrate seamlessly with Apple's Find My app, leveraging the vast network of Apple devices to help locate lost items through Bluetooth connectivity.
When a lost item comes within range of any Apple device, its location is automatically updated and shared with the owner through the Find My network. The system also allows finders to view custom messages and contact information provided by the AirTag owner, facilitating the return of misplaced belongings.
Market Context and Evolution
Since its initial release, the AirTag has become a popular choice among Apple users, particularly travelers seeking to monitor their luggage and personal items. The tracker market has grown increasingly competitive with entries from various brands, but Apple's integration with its ecosystem has maintained the AirTag's relevance.
Apple has previously collaborated with airlines like Air India to implement AirTag tracking for lost luggage, demonstrating practical applications that have helped reduce permanently misplaced bags. However, the growing use of tracking devices has also raised concerns about potential misuse, with reports of stalking incidents involving Bluetooth tags despite manufacturers' intentions for these to track objects rather than people.
To use the second-generation AirTag, customers need an iPhone or iPad running the latest iOS 26 version, along with an Apple Account and iCloud sign-in. This requirement ensures optimal performance and security within Apple's integrated ecosystem.
