Apple Introduces Upgraded AirTag with Enhanced Tracking Capabilities
Apple has expanded its ecosystem of accessories and wearable technology with the launch of an updated version of its popular AirTag item tracker. The new model, which builds upon the original introduced in 2021, brings significant improvements in functionality while maintaining the same price point, making it an attractive upgrade for users who frequently misplace everyday items like keys, bags, and luggage.
Key Enhancements in the New AirTag Model
The updated AirTag features several notable upgrades designed to make locating lost belongings quicker and more efficient. According to Apple's statement released on Monday, 26 January, these improvements focus on extending range, enhancing audio alerts, and integrating with more devices within the Apple ecosystem.
1. Extended Bluetooth Tracking Range
The most significant upgrade comes in the form of an improved Bluetooth chip that extends the tracking range by up to 50% compared to the previous generation. This enhancement means users can locate their items from greater distances, particularly useful when belongings are nearby but out of direct sight.
2. Louder Speaker with Distinctive Chime
Apple has equipped the new AirTag with a speaker that is 50% louder than before, featuring what the company describes as a "distinctive new chime." This improvement allows the sound to be heard from up to twice the distance, helping users find items hidden in bags, drawers, or furniture more easily.
3. Apple Watch Integration for Precision Finding
For the first time, Precision Finding functionality is now supported on Apple Watch. Users with Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, can locate their AirTag directly from their wrist without needing to rely on an iPhone. This integration adds convenience for Apple Watch owners who want quick access to tracking capabilities.
4. Unchanged Pricing with Added Value
Despite the numerous upgrades, Apple has maintained the same pricing structure for the new AirTag. The device remains available for $99 for a four-pack in international markets. For Indian consumers, pricing stays unchanged at ₹3,790 for a single AirTag and ₹12,900 for a four-pack. Additionally, Apple continues to offer free personalized engraving through its online store and app, adding a custom touch to the tracking devices.
5. Availability and Compatibility Requirements
The new AirTag is available for order immediately and will reach Apple Store locations and authorized resellers later this week. To use the device, users need iOS 26 or later, or iPadOS 26 or later, along with an Apple Account and Find My enabled. Apple emphasizes that, like the original model, the updated version is "designed exclusively for tracking objects, and not people or pets," and includes enhanced protections against unwanted tracking across both iOS and Android platforms.
Privacy and Security Considerations
Apple has reinforced the privacy features in the updated AirTag, maintaining cross-platform alerts that work on both iOS and Android devices to prevent unwanted tracking or stalking. These measures ensure that while the tracking capabilities have improved, user privacy remains a priority in the device's design and functionality.
