Apple is preparing to significantly expand its satellite connectivity capabilities in future iPhones, moving beyond the emergency SOS feature first introduced with iPhone 14 in 2022. According to recent reports, the tech giant is developing at least five new satellite-based features that could transform how users stay connected in remote areas.
Five Groundbreaking Satellite Features Coming to iPhone
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reveals that Apple is building an API that would allow third-party developers to integrate satellite connections into their applications. This development could open up numerous possibilities for apps requiring connectivity in areas without cellular coverage, though implementation would depend on individual app makers and not all features may be compatible with this system.
The iPhone maker is also working on bringing satellite connectivity to Apple Maps, which would enable users to navigate without requiring a SIM card or Wi-Fi connection. This feature could be particularly valuable for travelers, hikers, and those in regions with poor network coverage.
Another significant upgrade involves improved satellite messaging capabilities. While current satellite features only support text messages, Apple is developing the ability to send photos via satellite, greatly expanding the communication possibilities when cellular networks are unavailable.
Overcoming Current Limitations
Perhaps the most practical improvement addresses one of the biggest limitations of current satellite connectivity on iPhones. Apple plans to enable satellite connection even when the device is indoors, in a pocket, or inside a car - eliminating the current requirement to point the iPhone toward the sky for satellite access.
Gurman has also confirmed an earlier report by The Information that the iPhone 18 series will feature support for 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks). This technology will allow cell towers to tap into satellites, potentially providing significantly better coverage on future iPhones.
Potential Partnerships and Future Directions
Apple currently relies on Globalstar's satellite network to power its existing satellite features. However, the company is reportedly exploring a potential sale, with Elon Musk's SpaceX emerging as a possible purchaser. This development could significantly impact Apple's satellite strategy.
Most of the planned features would require substantial improvements to Globalstar's satellite infrastructure. According to reports, Apple's strategy involves offering basic satellite features at no cost while allowing customers to pay carriers like SpaceX or others for more advanced connectivity options.
A potential SpaceX-Globalstar merger could create both complications and opportunities for Apple. The Cupertino-based company might collaborate more deeply with SpaceX to offer premium satellite features, potentially creating a new paid tier for enhanced connectivity.
While Apple reportedly has no immediate plans to offer satellite-based phone calls, video calls, or web browsing, SpaceX is said to be aggressively moving in that direction, suggesting potential future expansions of satellite capabilities on Apple devices.
