Mahindra has officially launched the XUV 9S in the Indian market, marking a significant milestone as the brand's first three-row electric SUV. This new entrant creates a unique position for itself, as it doesn't face direct competition in the three-row electric body style. However, it lands squarely in the same price territory as premium two-row electric SUVs, most notably the Tata Harrier EV, setting the stage for an interesting comparison for potential buyers.

Dimension Comparison: Space and Proportions

When it comes to size, the Mahindra XUV 9S presents itself as a substantial vehicle. It measures 4,737 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,747 mm in height. In contrast, the five-seater Tata Harrier EV is comparatively shorter at 4,607 mm in length but wider at 2,132 mm. Its height is 1,740 mm, and it sits on a wheelbase of 2,741 mm. The dimensions highlight the XUV 9S's focus on accommodating more passengers, while the Harrier EV prioritizes cabin width.

Battery, Performance, and Driving Range

The heart of any electric vehicle lies in its powertrain, and both SUVs offer compelling options. Tata equips the Harrier EV with a choice of two lithium-ion battery packs. The 65 kWh battery is paired with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup, generating 238 hp. The larger 75 kWh unit supports both RWD and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, with the AWD version boosting power to an impressive 313 hp and 504 Nm of torque. On a single charge, the Harrier EV promises a range of 538 km with the 65 kWh pack and up to 627 km with the 75 kWh battery. Using a 100 kW fast charger, it can go from 20% to 80% in approximately 25 minutes.

Mahindra has opted for a three-pronged strategy for the XUV 9S, offering 59 kWh, 70 kWh, and 79 kWh battery packs. Power outputs correspond to each pack, delivering 231 hp, 245 hp, and 285 hp respectively. All variants produce a consistent 380 Nm of torque. Where the XUV 9S truly shines is in its claimed range, which scales up to an impressive 521 km, 600 km, and 679 km depending on the selected battery, giving it a slight edge in the long-distance category.

Pricing and Market Position

The final and most crucial factor for many buyers is the price. The Mahindra XUV 9S starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs 19.95 lakh, with the top-end variant priced at Rs 29.45 lakh. The Tata Harrier EV is positioned from Rs 21.49 lakh to Rs 28.99 lakh. This pricing clearly places both these electric SUVs in a similar bracket, making the choice a matter of prioritizing space and maximum range (XUV 9S) against established design and powerful AWD options (Harrier EV).
