Mercedes-Benz Unveils Updated S-Class with Euro 7 Engines and Advanced Tech

Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class, marking the mid-cycle refresh of the W223 generation. This facelifted luxury sedan introduces significant design revisions, next-generation technology upgrades, and enhanced features, alongside revised powertrains engineered to comply with the upcoming Euro 7 emission standards. The launch expands customisation options through Mercedes-Benz’s Manufaktur programme, offering buyers greater personalisation scope.

Global Launch and India Arrival Timeline

The facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class will first go on sale in global markets, with an expected arrival in India by late 2026 or early 2027. It remains uncertain whether the updated model will be locally assembled or imported as a completely built unit (CBU), potentially impacting pricing and availability in the Indian market.

Powertrain Updates for Euro 7 Compliance

No new engine options have been introduced, but the existing powertrain line-up has been updated to meet Euro 7 standards. The range retains both six-cylinder diesel and petrol V8 engines, with key revisions:

  • M177 Evo V8: A reworked 3,982cc twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and dual balancer shafts, delivering 537hp and 750Nm in the S 580.
  • M256 Evo Six-Cylinder Petrol: Updated with optimised intake and exhaust passages, a reprofiled intake camshaft, and improved insulation.
  • OM656 Evo Six-Cylinder Diesel: Upgraded with an electrically heated catalytic converter to meet tighter emission norms.

Plug-in hybrid versions see their electric-only driving range increased to around 100km from 75km. All engines are supported by a refined 48V mild-hybrid system with a 17kW integrated starter generator, offering earlier boost assistance and smoother transitions. For India, the line-up is likely limited to regular six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, excluding V8 and plug-in hybrid variants.

Suspension and Steering Enhancements

Adaptive air suspension remains standard, with active self-levelling as an option. Rear-axle steering is now standard at 4.5 degrees, while a 10-degree setup is optional, improving maneuverability and stability.

Design Revisions and Exterior Features

The updated S-Class retains its familiar silhouette, with notable changes at the front:

  • A more striking, larger front grille with chrome star inserts and a subtly illuminated surround.
  • An illuminated bonnet-mounted star and larger headlamps with triple three-pointed star-shaped DRLs.
  • Micro-LED Digital Light technology offering 40% improved illumination and an ultra-range high beam reaching up to 600 metres.

Side updates include new alloy wheel designs, such as intricate 50-spoke options, and new exterior paint shades from the Manufaktur range. The rear features slimmer tail-lamps with three-pointed star LED elements, similar to the latest E-Class. Additional sensors support upgraded driver assistance systems.

Interior Upgrades and Technology

Inside, the updated S-Class boasts a gloss black panel housing three displays, known as the Superscreen:

  • A 12.3-inch driver display and front passenger screen.
  • A 14.4-inch touchscreen controlling most vehicle functions, running the latest MB OS digital architecture.

MB OS integrates lighting, cameras, powertrain, and suspension, supporting AI-driven features, cloud connectivity, Google Maps-based navigation, and vehicle-to-everything functions. Rear passengers get two 13.1-inch entertainment touchscreens, with individual touch controllers replacing the central tablet. The cabin retains leather upholstery, optional quilting, and wood or trim inserts, while climate vents are concealed behind illuminated metal strips with powered adjustments.

Most functions are accessed via the touchscreen and capacitive shortcuts. A dashboard-mounted camera enables facial recognition, video calls, and cabin monitoring. Rear-seat features include up to 43 degrees of recline, heating, ventilation, massage functions, and an optional four-seat configuration.

AMG and Armoured Variants

Mercedes-Benz will offer AMG and AMG Line Plus trims with sportier styling. The armoured Mercedes-Benz S 680 GUARD 4MATIC uses the Integrated Protection System (iSS), combining a protective cell with an aluminium exterior to meet VR10 ballistic protection standards. It features a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine and has been tested with biofidelic dummies for safety validation.
