Samsung Halts Galaxy Z TriFold Sales After Mere Three Months on Market
Samsung has officially announced it is winding down sales of its premium Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone, priced at $2,899 (approximately Rs 2.68 lakh), just three months after its initial release. According to a report from Bloomberg, the device was conceived more as a high-tech trophy for Samsung's engineering team rather than a mass-market product targeting average consumers.
Official Confirmation and Sales Strategy
The first indications of the TriFold's retirement emerged this month on Samsung's official website, where the phone is now listed simply as "sold out" instead of teasing future restocks. A company spokesperson confirmed the strategy to Bloomberg, stating that sales will be halted immediately in Samsung's home market of South Korea. In the United States, sales will continue only until the remaining inventory is fully cleared out.
Notably, Samsung did not launch the two-hinged TriFold device in the Indian market, further highlighting its limited global rollout. The phone was designed to unfold from a standard-sized smartphone into a massive 10-inch tablet, showcasing cutting-edge folding technology.
Reasons Behind the Early Exit
The report identifies multiple factors contributing to the TriFold's premature discontinuation. Beyond its steep price point, the device was intentionally created for a tiny segment of "early adopters" rather than mainstream consumers. Unlike Samsung's popular Galaxy S or Z Fold series, the TriFold was never made available through major mobile carriers such as Verizon or AT&T, significantly limiting its distribution channels.
Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Samsung's Mobile Experience Business, recently addressed the device's future, noting that a "TriFold 2" successor is not guaranteed due to manufacturing complexities. This uncertainty underscores the experimental nature of the original product.
Rare Collector's Item Emerges
Despite the official wind-down, a handful of Galaxy Z TriFold units are reportedly still available in select locations. Reports from Reddit and other social media platforms suggest that a small number of devices have been spotted at Samsung Experience Stores in Frisco, Texas, and Queens, New York. These remaining units are essentially becoming tech collector's items, sought after by enthusiasts who value rare and innovative technology.
Samsung's Strategic Shift to AI Focus
With the TriFold's phase-out, Samsung is redirecting its focus toward the newly launched Galaxy S26 Ultra, which emphasizes artificial intelligence features and a novel "Privacy Display" over experimental screen-folding mechanisms. This pivot reflects the company's broader strategy to prioritize AI integration and consumer-friendly innovations in its flagship products.
