Trichy Groups Prepare 600 Seed Balls for World Environment Day

Trichy: Treechy Lovers and the International Legal Rights and Human Justice Council jointly prepared 600 seed balls of native tree species as part of World Environment Day celebrations held at Holy Cross College on Tuesday. Students took a pledge to throw these seed balls on barren lands in Trichy rural areas just before the onset of the northeast monsoon later this year.

The seed balls, made from seetha, perungkondrai, poovarasu, and magilam tree varieties, were processed with panchagavya—a traditional organic mixture. Each student from the Exnora club and the postgraduate research department of botany received two seed balls. They will safeguard the seed balls until the monsoon begins, according to C Balasubramanian, founder of Treechy Lovers.

Organizers explained that the soil around the ball dissolves in rainwater, allowing the seeds to absorb necessary nutrients and moisture for germination during the monsoon. The growth of the seed balls will be monitored by students, and local villagers will be entrusted with caring for the trees once they sprout.

In addition to the seed ball initiative, around 400 cloth bags with a capacity to carry up to 7 kg each were distributed to promote environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic bags.

How Seed Balls Work

Seed balls are a simple and effective method for reforestation. The clay and compost coating protects the seeds from birds, insects, and harsh weather, while providing nutrients for germination. When rain falls, the ball breaks down, and the seed sprouts naturally.

Community Involvement

This initiative highlights the role of students and local organizations in environmental conservation. By involving villagers in tree care, the project ensures long-term sustainability. The distribution of cloth bags also encourages reducing plastic waste in the community.
