Sony PlayStation 5 Prices Surge Globally, PS5 Pro May Launch in India Soon
Starting April 2, purchasing a PlayStation 5 will become significantly more expensive worldwide. Sony announced on Friday that it is implementing global price increases across its PS5 lineup, marking the second hike in under a year. The standard disc edition will rise from $549.99 to $649.99, the Digital Edition from $499.99 to $599.99, and the PS5 Pro will jump from $749.99 to a steep $899.99. Additionally, the PlayStation Portal remote player will increase by $50 to $249.99. Sony attributed these changes to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape."
Context of the Price Hikes and Broader Gaming Trends
This latest increase follows a previous $50 price hike across all PS5 models in the United States last August. Combined, these adjustments mean the standard PS5 is now $100 more expensive than it was eight months ago and $150 more than its launch price of $500 in November 2020. The PS5 Pro, which launched at $699.99 in late 2024, has now surpassed $900 in less than 18 months, bringing the once-hypothetical $1,000 console closer to reality.
Sony is not alone in raising prices. Microsoft increased Xbox console and controller prices last May, and Nintendo bumped the original Switch from $299 to $339. The reasons behind these hikes extend beyond individual company margins, including:
- U.S. tariffs and ongoing conflicts in regions like Ukraine and Iran disrupting global supply chains.
- Sharp increases in RAM prices, partly driven by AI data centers consuming memory at an unprecedented rate, which pressures consumer hardware costs.
- Reports from Bloomberg suggesting Sony may delay the next-generation PlayStation to 2028 or 2029, indicating severe industry challenges.
Impact on India and Potential PS5 Pro Launch
Sony has not announced any immediate price revisions for India following the global hike. However, India is not immune to such changes; last July, Sony quietly raised the PS5 Digital Edition's price from Rs 44,990 to Rs 49,990 without an official statement, while the Disc Edition has remained at Rs 54,990. Given Sony's history of aligning with global trends, it is reasonable to expect price increases in India in the coming months.
The more significant development for India is the potential official launch of the PS5 Pro. Previously unavailable due to Wi-Fi 7 support requiring the 6GHz spectrum band, which India had not approved, the console may now be on its way. In January 2026, India lifted restrictions on the lower portion of the band, and shortly after, the PS5 Pro appeared on the Bureau of Indian Standards certification database—a typical signal of an impending launch. Grey market units are already circulating between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000, and an official launch would likely fall within or above this range after taxes and duties are applied.
As gaming becomes more expensive globally, consumers in India and worldwide must navigate these rising costs while anticipating new product releases like the PS5 Pro.
