IIT Madras Hosts International Conference on Diamond and Emergent Materials

Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has taken a significant step in advancing materials science through its research group, the India Centre for Lab Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD). The center recently organized the prestigious international conference on diamond and emergent materials, known as iCDEM 2026. This major event successfully gathered approximately 250 leading researchers, scientists, and industry professionals from across the globe, all working at the forefront of materials science, electronics, and quantum technology.

Focus on Advanced Applications and Cutting-Edge Technologies

A primary emphasis of the conference was exploring the revolutionary use of diamond and related carbon-based materials for critical applications in energy, space exploration, and fusion technology. Discussions highlighted diamond's exceptional properties, including its superior thermal conductivity, remarkable radiation hardness, and unparalleled durability, which make it ideal for demanding technological environments. The event also delved into next-generation methodologies, such as integrating advanced modelling, sophisticated simulation techniques, and AI/ML-driven monitoring systems to optimize the growth and development of diamond and carbon-based materials.

National Mission and Future Initiatives

Professor M S Ramachandra Rao, the principal investigator of InCent-LGD, outlined the ambitious mission of the research group. "Our goal is to establish a comprehensive national center equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for lab-grown diamond technologies, utilizing indigenously developed processes," he stated. Professor Rao further announced that specialized training programs tailored for industry professionals will be launched in the near future. Additionally, he confirmed that the next edition of the conference is scheduled to take place from January 27 to 29, 2027, continuing the momentum of innovation and collaboration.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Uses

Professor Sathyan Subbiah emphasized the center's strategic objective to broaden the applications of lab-grown diamonds far beyond the traditional jewellery sector. "We aim to foster robust collaborations with industry partners to significantly enhance India's capabilities and leadership in this high-tech field," he explained. Lab-grown diamonds, which are synthesized in meticulously controlled laboratory environments, possess properties virtually identical to natural diamonds but are particularly well-suited for advanced technological applications due to their consistency and purity.

Substantial Government Support

The InCent-LGD initiative is bolstered by substantial financial backing from the government, with a grant totaling ₹242.96 crore (approximately ₹243 crore). This funding underscores the national importance of developing indigenous expertise and infrastructure in lab-grown diamond technology, positioning India as a key player in the global materials science arena.
