The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is set to introduce fully driverless metro train services on the upcoming East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro, drawing inspiration from the driverless operations already running on select corridors of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. This marks a significant technological upgrade for public transport in the state capital.
Advanced Train Tenders Issued
UPMRC has floated tenders for the design and manufacturing of 15 advanced metro train sets, along with modern signalling systems for Phase 1-B of the East-West Corridor. The initiative represents a major leap in technology adoption for Uttar Pradesh's metro network.
Fully Automated Operations
The upcoming trains will operate in unattended train operation mode, enabling fully automated movement without the need for drivers inside the coaches. All operations will be centrally monitored through the Operations Control Centre, ensuring seamless coordination.
Smart Train Control System
The trains will utilize communication-based train control technology that automatically manages speed, braking, and station stoppages. This system is expected to improve punctuality, operational efficiency, and passenger safety across the corridor.
Enhanced Safety Mechanisms
The automated system will continuously maintain a safe gap between trains and can automatically apply brakes during emergencies or operational disruptions. This reduces the possibility of human error and enhances service reliability.
AI-Based Predictive Maintenance
The corridor will feature AI-based predictive maintenance systems integrated with a computerized maintenance management platform. These systems analyze real-time train data to detect faults and maintenance needs before technical failures occur, minimizing downtime.
Passenger Comfort Features
Metro coaches on the new corridor will include livestreaming-enabled infotainment screens for passenger information and announcements. Additionally, sensor-based air-conditioning systems equipped with CO2 sensors will adjust cooling levels according to passenger load, improving comfort and reducing electricity consumption.
These upgrades are expected to set a new benchmark for urban transit in Uttar Pradesh, combining cutting-edge technology with passenger-centric design.
