Nokia Unveils Largest Fixed Networks R&D Laboratory in Chennai

Nokia has recently inaugurated its most extensive fixed networks research and development laboratory at SIPCOT Siruseri in Chennai, positioning it as one of the company's largest global centers. This strategic move underscores Nokia's commitment to advancing telecommunications infrastructure and innovation in India.

Focus on Cutting-Edge Technologies

The new facility is set to concentrate on a wide array of technology innovations, including:

  • 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G PON (Passive Optical Network) solutions
  • Fixed wireless access and Wi-Fi technologies
  • MDU (Multi-Dwelling Unit) solutions
  • Access network and home controllers

Additionally, the center will prioritize next-generation broadband technologies, AI automation, cloud-based network controllers, and advanced network solutions, aiming to enhance connectivity and efficiency in telecommunications.

Substantial Investment and Phased Development

According to state industries minister T R B Rajaa, the first phase of this project involves an investment of Rs 270 crore. The company plans to invest an additional Rs 300 crore in the subsequent phase, reflecting a significant financial commitment to the lab's growth and capabilities.

Background and Establishment

The memorandum of understanding to establish this laboratory was exchanged in August 2024 during the official visit of Chief Minister M K Stalin to the United States. This initiative highlights the collaborative efforts between Nokia and the Tamil Nadu government to foster technological advancement and economic development in the region.

This new R&D hub is expected to drive innovation in broadband technologies, contributing to global telecommunications standards and reinforcing Chennai's role as a key technology hub in India.
