PM Modi Launches Major Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat, Strengthening India's Chip Ambitions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated a significant Rs 3,300 crore semiconductor manufacturing facility established by Kaynes Technology at the Sanand GIDC in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This event marks the inauguration of the second such semiconductor plant in the country, representing a crucial step forward in India's strategic plans to enhance domestic chip production capabilities.

Boosting Domestic Manufacturing and Global Positioning

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi emphasized India's broader ambitions within the global semiconductor sector. He asserted that the nation is actively positioning itself as a reliable and competitive player in the international semiconductor supply chain. "India of the 21st century is not merely a witness to change, but is moving forward with the resolve to lead that change," the Prime Minister stated, according to PTI reports.

He highlighted the launch of Semiconductor Mission 2 in the latest union budget, a strategic initiative designed to foster self-reliance across various production sectors. Additionally, PM Modi noted that India's decision to join the Pax Silica initiative would significantly strengthen access to critical minerals that are essential for advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Plant Details and Production Capacity

According to Gujarat's Science and Technology Minister, Arjun Modhwadia, the newly inaugurated Kaynes Semicon plant is projected to manufacture an impressive volume of over 7 lakh (700,000) chips per day. This facility is a key component of the national semiconductor mission and is expected to substantially bolster India's domestic chip production capacity, reducing dependency on imports.

Minister Modhwadia, speaking ahead of the launch, remarked, "With this second unit, we are entering the era of this futuristic industry. The USP of the Prime Minister has been his ability to turn challenges into opportunities," as reported by ANI.

Rapid Project Execution and Previous Milestones

The inauguration of the Kaynes plant follows closely on the heels of another major semiconductor milestone. Just weeks prior, in February, Prime Minister Modi had launched the Micron semiconductor plant. Reflecting on the swift execution of that project, he detailed an accelerated timeline: "The MoU for this facility was signed in June 2023, the foundation stone was laid in September, and by February 2026, commercial production had already begun."

He contrasted this pace with international norms, stating, "Even in developed countries, such approvals and processes take years, but India has completed this seemingly impossible task in just 900 days." PM Modi attributed this success to clear intentions and dedicated policies focused on rapid national development, which he said create decisive momentum for such critical projects.

Concurrent Cultural Inauguration

Earlier on the same day, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the Samrat Samprati Museum at Koba Tirth in Gandhinagar. This inauguration was timed to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. The museum, named after Samrat Samprati—the grandson of Emperor Ashoka—is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich historical and cultural legacy of Jainism, adding a cultural dimension to the day's events.

The launch of the Kaynes semiconductor plant represents a significant stride in India's journey towards technological self-sufficiency and global leadership in the high-stakes semiconductor industry, aligning with broader economic and strategic goals.
