A 77-year-old autorickshaw driver in Salem has found an innovative way to beat the summer heat, providing a cool ride for his passengers. R Subramani, a resident of Deivanai Nagar near Vennangodi Muniyappan Koil at Mamangam, has installed a 'natural AC' in his autorickshaw using a simple yet effective method.
How the natural AC works
Subramani has lined the inside roof of his autorickshaw with thermal insulation, added a waterproof top layer, and covered the roof with straw and green paddy. He has also fitted a small motorised sprinkler system that sprays water over the roof through pipes. This helps keep the vehicle cool through evaporation, providing a refreshing environment for passengers even in the sweltering summer heat.
Background of the driver
Subramani has been earning a livelihood by driving an autorickshaw for the past nine years. Before that, he worked as a tailor. In addition to regular rides, he takes children to school daily. He says he modifies his autorickshaw every summer to make it more comfortable for passengers.
Public appreciation
Subramani's creatively modified 'natural AC' autorickshaw, which operates across Salem city, has drawn appreciation from the public. Passengers have praised his ingenuity and dedication to providing a comfortable ride.
This innovative solution not only helps beat the heat but also showcases the resourcefulness of the local community. Subramani's efforts have made him a popular figure among residents and commuters alike.
