Punjabi University Research Uncovers Sustainable Road Construction Methods

A groundbreaking study conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering at Punjabi University in Patiala has identified innovative techniques to enhance road construction materials. The research focuses on utilizing waste products to stabilize clay soil or highly compressible soil, significantly boosting its load-bearing capacity.

Research Led by Ethiopian Scholar and Supervisor

The research work was spearheaded by Addisu Ayele Jebo, an Ethiopian national, under the expert supervision of Kunal Jain. Addisu Ayele Jebo emphasized that this study opens new avenues in the fields of road construction and soil stabilization, potentially revolutionizing infrastructure development.

Effective Waste Materials Identified

The study found that specific waste materials are highly effective in strengthening clayey soil. These include:

  • Coffee Husk Ash (CHA): A byproduct from coffee processing.
  • Pumice: A lightweight volcanic rock known for its porous nature.
  • Scoria: Dark volcanic debris with excellent binding properties.

According to the findings, CHA and scoria play a crucial role in preventing shrinkage cracks in soil and enhancing the interlocking density of roads, leading to more durable and resilient infrastructure.

Sustainability and Abundance of Materials

Addisu Ayele Jebo highlighted that these materials are abundantly available as waste in Ethiopia, making this approach not only technically sound but also environmentally sustainable. This discovery aligns with global efforts to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly construction practices.

Technical and Economic Advantages

Kunal Jain reported that significant improvements in soil behavior were recorded through rigorous testing methods, including Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests. He stated that this method offers substantial technical and economic advantages, potentially lowering construction costs while improving quality.

Validation Through Advanced Software

Jain further explained that models developed using IITPAVE software, in accordance with Indian Road Congress (IRC 2018) standards, proved these waste materials to be a superior alternative for modern road construction. This validation ensures that the findings meet established engineering benchmarks and can be implemented in real-world projects.
