WhatsApp Username Feature: India Asks to Pause Rollout

India Asks WhatsApp to Halt Username Feature Rollout

India has formally requested that WhatsApp pause the rollout of its new username feature, citing concerns over user safety, traceability, and the potential for increased spam and fraud. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) communicated this to the messaging platform, emphasizing the need for compliance with Indian laws, particularly the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Why India Raised Concerns

The government’s primary worry is that usernames could make it harder to trace malicious actors. Under current regulations, social media platforms must enable the identification of the first originator of a message. Usernames, if not linked to phone numbers, could bypass this requirement. Additionally, there is fear that bad actors could create multiple anonymous accounts to spread misinformation or conduct scams. According to a senior official, “The feature could be misused for illegal activities, and we have asked WhatsApp to ensure full traceability before proceeding.”

WhatsApp’s Response

WhatsApp has acknowledged the government’s concerns and stated that user safety is a priority. A company spokesperson said, “We are in dialogue with the Indian government and will ensure our features comply with local laws. The username feature is designed to give users more privacy, but we will address all regulatory requirements.” The company has not yet announced a revised timeline for the rollout in India.

Impact on Users

If implemented, the username feature would allow users to be contacted without sharing their phone numbers, enhancing privacy. However, India’s stance may delay this benefit for over 500 million WhatsApp users in the country. Experts suggest a compromise could involve mandatory phone number verification for username creation. The final decision will likely set a precedent for how global tech companies balance innovation with local regulations.
