A new pedestrian subway at Delhi airport is set to revolutionize passenger movement between Terminal 3 (T3) and Terminal 2 (T2). The underground shortcut will reduce the walking distance by approximately 90%, from nearly 750 metres to just about 80 metres, making inter-terminal transfers faster and more convenient.
Faster, Safer, and Seamless Airport Connectivity
The subway will significantly improve last-mile connectivity between the metro station and Terminal 2. Passengers can expect faster, safer, and smoother movement, enhancing the overall airport travel experience. The project aims to strengthen airport infrastructure and provide a seamless journey for travellers.
Advanced Box-Pushing Method Used in Construction
Engineers are employing the box-pushing method for construction, which avoids large-scale digging. This faster technique helps reduce disruption, manage space constraints, and protect nearby utilities and surrounding airport infrastructure. The method ensures minimal impact on airport operations during construction.
Escalators and Easy Luggage Movement Planned
The subway will feature escalators and smooth access points, making it easier for passengers to move with luggage. The design focuses on reducing walking effort and improving overall travel comfort, especially for those with heavy bags.
DMRC and DIAL Jointly Executing Project
The project is being developed jointly by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Their collaboration aims to ensure seamless integration between metro services and airport terminal access, providing a unified travel experience for passengers.
Work Started Last Year, Completion Expected Soon
Construction of the subway began in June last year. It is expected to be completed by the end of this year, marking a key upgrade in airport passenger connectivity infrastructure. Once operational, the subway will be a major step forward in modernizing Delhi airport.
Walking Distance to Drop from 750m to 80m
Upon completion, the walking distance between T3 and T2 will be reduced from nearly 750 metres to about 80 metres. This dramatic reduction will make travel between terminals much faster and easier, eliminating the need for long walks or shuttle buses.
New Pedestrian Subway to Link T3 and T2
The new pedestrian subway will directly connect the Terminal 3 metro station with Terminal 2. This will improve passenger movement and reduce dependence on shuttle buses and long walking routes, aligning Delhi airport with global hubs like Zurich, Dubai, Singapore, and New York JFK.
