Tata Motors is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the launch of the highly anticipated Sierra EV in India on June 30. This upcoming electric SUV is poised to compete directly with rivals such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, and Mahindra BE 6 in the burgeoning midsize electric SUV segment.

Design and Exterior

The Sierra EV is expected to sport a distinct visual identity compared to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart. Like most electric vehicles, Tata is likely to equip it with a closed-off front grille, redesigned bumpers, and aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels to enhance efficiency.

Interior and Features

Inside, the Sierra EV is anticipated to be positioned as a premium offering within Tata's lineup. The cabin is expected to feature a contemporary dashboard design with large digital displays. Lower variants could get a dual-screen setup, while top-spec versions may offer a triple-screen layout similar to the one found in the ICE-powered Sierra.

Additional features likely include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a powered tailgate. The Sierra EV is also expected to offer connected car technology, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with a 12-speaker JBL sound system featuring Dolby Atmos.

Powertrain Options

In terms of powertrain, the Sierra EV is expected to slot between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV in Tata Motors' electric vehicle portfolio. The SUV could be offered with multiple battery pack options, including 55 kWh and 65 kWh units. Higher variants may also receive a larger 75 kWh battery pack, similar to the one available with the Harrier EV.

Tata is likely to offer more than one drivetrain configuration. Entry-level variants could feature a single-motor setup, while higher trims may get a dual-motor arrangement with all-wheel-drive capability. These versions are expected to use Tata's Quad Wheel Drive technology, which made its debut on the Harrier EV.

Battery-as-a-Service Program

Another highlight could be the inclusion of Tata's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program. Under this ownership model, customers can buy the vehicle without the battery and opt for a subscription-based battery plan separately. This helps lower the initial purchase cost and could make EV ownership more accessible to a wider set of buyers.
