India's GitHub Developer Base Reaches 27 Million, Setting Global Growth Record
GitHub's Chief Operating Officer, Kyle Daigle, has announced that India now boasts an impressive 27 million developers on the platform. This milestone underscores the country's rapidly expanding tech ecosystem and its pivotal role in the global software development landscape.
Unprecedented Growth in 2026
Since the beginning of 2026, more than two million developers from India have joined GitHub, marking the highest influx from any country worldwide. Daigle emphasized that India remains GitHub's fastest-growing developer community, with one in every seven new developers on the platform hailing from the nation.
"This growth cannot be attributed to population alone," Daigle stated during his visit to Bengaluru for a company developer event over the weekend. "We are witnessing a rising pipeline of younger, AI-native developers entering the ecosystem, driven by excitement and interest from this first generation."
The Rise of AI-Native Developers
Daigle pointed out that students and even teenagers are actively contributing to projects, fueled by greater access to advanced tools. AI-assisted coding technologies are significantly lowering entry barriers, enabling developers to tackle more complex work efficiently.
"AI tools are helping them solve bigger problems much more quickly," he explained, noting that the surge is evident not only in sign-up numbers but also in heightened activity levels across the platform.
India's Leadership in Open Source Contributions
India has emerged as a powerhouse in open source development, now leading globally in the number of open source contributors. Additionally, the country ranks second only to the United States in open source AI contributions, highlighting its growing influence in cutting-edge technology fields.
