A journey of hope for a life-saving kidney transplant turned into tragedy for a Bangladeshi family in New Delhi. Mohammad Nurul Amin (44), a transporter, had traveled to the Indian capital to support his brother-in-law, Mosharaf Hossain (42), who was scheduled for a kidney transplant at a local hospital. The two, along with Hossain's wife Rahana (38), arrived in India on the night of June 2.
Details of the Incident
Md Robiul (34), a relative of the family, informed the Times of India that the prospective kidney donor and her daughter—both relatives of Hossain—had also traveled from Dhaka to Delhi for the procedure. On Wednesday morning, just before leaving for the hospital, they were all having breakfast at a bed and breakfast in Hauz Rani when a fire broke out. The blaze claimed Amin's life, while the donor, her daughter, and Rahana remain on life support. Hossain, who is also injured, is in relatively better condition. Amin is survived by his wife and three children.
Grim Scene at AIIMS Mortuary
A pall of gloom enveloped the AIIMS mortuary, where police personnel, relatives of victims, translators, and embassy officials were busy completing procedural formalities related to postmortem examinations and repatriation of bodies. Among the deceased were two Nigerian nationals: David Atim and his mother, Esther Ngusoron Tuta. They had arrived in Delhi on May 11 for treatment of Tuta's brain tumor. The surgery had been performed, and they were awaiting a follow-up visit. They are believed to have died due to suffocation. An embassy official noted that Atim was reportedly planning to marry soon.
List of Foreign Fatalities
According to official records, 21 people have died in the fire, 12 of them foreigners. Apart from the two Nigerians and the Bangladeshi, three citizens of Kyrgyzstan—Tulkinov Khumoium, Makhpiratkhoon Kochkarova, and Nargiza Khakimova—lost their lives. Other victims include Ali Amer Mosa (Iraq); Mawombo Dikangu Leonard and Sita Khonde Beatrice of the Democratic Republic of Congo; Ana Christina Alberto Nhantumbo and Tshipamba Achil Ntambue of Mozambique; and Liberian national Janjay N Roland. DNA profiles of all victims have been preserved, as they cannot be matched in the absence of blood relatives in Delhi at this moment.
