The Deputy Commissioner of Belagavi has directed officials to be fully prepared to manage any flood situation arising from the ongoing heavy rainfall in the region. The directive comes as the district braces for potential flooding, with the India Meteorological Department issuing warnings of continued downpours.
Helplines to Be Established Without Delay
During a review meeting held on Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner instructed all taluk-level officers to establish district and taluk-level helplines immediately. These helplines will serve as crucial communication channels for residents in case of emergencies. "The helplines must be operational without any delay to ensure that people can reach out for help when needed," the DC said.
Preparedness Measures Across Departments
Officials from various departments, including revenue, public works, and disaster management, have been asked to remain on high alert. The DC emphasized the need for coordination among departments to ensure a swift response. Teams have been formed to monitor river levels and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Additionally, relief camps and essential supplies are being readied for possible evacuation.
Impact of Heavy Rainfall
Belagavi district has been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past week, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The Krishna and its tributaries are flowing near danger levels, raising concerns among residents. According to the district administration, at least 12 villages have been identified as vulnerable to flooding. The DC urged people in these areas to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories.
Previous Flood History
Belagavi has a history of severe floods, with the most recent major event in 2021 causing widespread damage. The current preparations aim to minimize losses and ensure public safety. The district administration is also coordinating with the state government for additional resources if needed.
