Bengaluru ORR Tech Corridor Gets Rs 378 Crore Concretisation Plan, Year-Long Traffic Disruption Expected
Bengaluru ORR Rs 378 Crore Concretisation: Year-Long Traffic Chaos

Bengaluru ORR Tech Corridor Set for Major Concretisation

The main carriageway of Bengaluru's Outer Ring Road (ORR), stretching from Silk Board to KR Pura, will be dug up and converted into a 190mm-thick concrete stretch as part of a massive Rs 378 crore redevelopment project. Officials have confirmed that the work is expected to significantly alter the corridor, which is a vital artery for the city's tech industry.

17.1 km Tech Corridor to Be Rebuilt in Two Phases

The ORR upgrade covers a total distance of 17.1 km from Silk Board to KR Pura. The project is divided into two phases: the first phase covers 5.4 km from Silk Board to Iblur, and the second phase covers 11.6 km from Iblur to KR Pura. Additionally, the project includes junction upgrades across six major intersections along the corridor to improve traffic flow.

Major Disruption Expected on Bengaluru Tech Corridor

The ORR stretch is used by over eight lakh commuters daily and houses 450 IT firms. During the concretisation phase, severe disruption is anticipated, including dug-up roads, lane restrictions, and heavy congestion. Commuters and businesses are advised to plan for alternative routes and extended travel times.

Service Roads to Be Upgraded First for Traffic Management

As part of the traffic management plan, service roads will be upgraded first. This includes improvements to drains, utilities, and footpaths. Once the service roads are ready, traffic will be diverted onto them before work begins on the main carriageway. This phased approach aims to minimise the impact on daily commuters.

Additional Upgrades: Footpaths, Lighting, and Drainage

The project includes several additional upgrades: Rs 48.4 crore for service roads, Rs 17.4 crore for footpaths, Rs 16.7 crore for street lighting, and Rs 9.8 crore for drainage improvements. Cycle tracks and utility ducts are also part of the plan to enhance the overall infrastructure of the corridor.

Rs 108 Crore Allocated for Main Road Concretisation

According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the concretisation of the main carriageway and junction improvements account for Rs 108 crore of the total Rs 378 crore project. This makes it the largest single component of the ORR redevelopment plan, highlighting the focus on long-term durability.

Year-Long ORR Work Expected to Begin Soon

Officials from B-Smile, the agency overseeing the project, have stated that the tendering process is in its final stages, with financial bids currently underway. Although the completion target is set at one year, efforts are being made to finish the project in nine months. Work is expected to begin shortly, and commuters should prepare for a year of significant traffic disruptions along the tech corridor.
