Heavy rains have severely disrupted normal life in Maharashtra and Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that the monsoon will advance further north in the coming days. The downpour has led to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and damage to property in several regions.
Impact on Maharashtra and Kerala
In Maharashtra, cities like Mumbai and Pune have witnessed intense rainfall, causing flooding in low-lying areas and disrupting local train and road services. The state government has issued alerts for residents in vulnerable zones. Kerala, already reeling from the effects of the monsoon, has reported landslides and rising water levels in rivers, prompting evacuations in some districts.
Monsoon Advances North
The IMD confirmed that the monsoon has arrived in Delhi and is expected to advance further north, covering more parts of northern India. Two days after the monsoon reached the national capital, Delhi experienced light to moderate rainfall, providing relief from the heat but also causing some waterlogging in areas.
According to the weather office, light rain and gusty winds are likely to persist in Delhi at least until Friday. The IMD has advised residents to stay cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours.
Forecast and Precautions
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall activity in the affected states over the next few days. Authorities in Maharashtra and Kerala have been urged to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for potential flooding and landslides. The monsoon's northward progression is expected to bring more rains to other states, including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to follow safety protocols and stay updated with weather warnings. The government has deployed rescue teams and relief materials in anticipation of further disruptions.
