The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated warnings for Karnataka as the southwest monsoon strengthens, issuing red alerts for several districts over the coming days. A red alert signifies the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 centimeters within a 24-hour period, prompting authorities to advise residents to exercise caution.
Red Alert for Monday and Tuesday
On Monday, the IMD issued a red alert for the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. The alert is effective for 24 hours starting from 8:30 am. For Tuesday, the red alert has been expanded to include five districts: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga. These areas are expected to experience intense precipitation, with potential impacts on daily life and infrastructure.
Extended Alerts for Wednesday
The red alert will continue into Wednesday, covering seven districts: Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Belagavi, Dharwad, and Haveri. The IMD has emphasized that these alerts remain in effect for 24 hours from 8:30 am on the respective days. Residents in these regions are urged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions as heavy rain activity is forecast to intensify over the coming days.
Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas, and be prepared for possible disruptions to transportation and power supply. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
