The Odisha State Archaeology department has signed non-financial memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in Bhopal to enhance the conservation of the state's rich heritage and architectural legacy. The agreements were formalized on Friday, according to an official statement from the state's culture department.
Integration of Modern Technology
Under the partnership with IIT-Kharagpur, advanced technologies such as LiDAR, 3D documentation, structural analysis, digital mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing, and scientific conservation methodologies will be employed for heritage preservation and monitoring. The collaboration also aims to foster research, innovation, and interdisciplinary knowledge integration in the field of heritage conservation, official sources confirmed.
Collaboration with SPA-Bhopal
Similarly, the MoU with SPA-Bhopal will support heritage planning and conservation architecture, museum and exhibition design, architectural documentation, technical advisory support, and capacity-building programmes. This partnership is expected to bring expertise in architectural conservation and design to Odisha's heritage sites.
Benefits for Monuments
Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj stated that around 82 monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and nearly 212 under the state archaeology department would benefit from this initiative. He emphasized that special importance would be given to the safety, protection, and long-term conservation of temples, monuments, and historic structures across the state.
Internship Opportunities for Students
In a significant announcement, 10 students from Odisha will receive internship opportunities at IIT-Kharagpur in the field of heritage and architectural conservation under the National Education Policy 2020. This program aims to nurture young talent and promote expertise in heritage conservation.
Unveiling of Official Logo
During the programme, the official logo of the Odisha State Archaeology was also unveiled, marking a new chapter in the state's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
