One killed, 18 injured as truck plunges into gorge in Theog

A tragic road accident in Himachal Pradesh's Theog area claimed one life and left 18 others injured when a truck carrying a band party skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge late on Monday night. The incident occurred near Theog town on the Shimla-Rampur highway, approximately 25 kilometers from Shimla.

Details of the accident

According to district administration officials, the truck was carrying 24 persons associated with a band party, along with a mare, from Chandigarh to Kotkhai. The vehicle was on its way to a wedding function when the driver lost control on a sharp curve, causing the truck to veer off the road and fall into a 50-meter-deep gorge.

Local residents and police immediately launched a rescue operation. The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Theog and later referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla for advanced treatment. The deceased has been identified as a 30-year-old man from the band party.

Rescue and response

Senior district officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Theog, reached the spot to supervise rescue efforts. The police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that brake failure may have led to the tragedy.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured. The state government has also directed the district administration to ensure proper medical care for the injured.

Background of road safety in the region

The Shimla-Rampur highway is known for its treacherous curves and steep gradients, especially during the monsoon season. Accidents are common in this stretch due to poor road conditions and reckless driving. Local activists have repeatedly demanded better road safety measures, including installation of crash barriers and warning signs at vulnerable points.

This accident has once again highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regular maintenance of vehicles, especially those used for passenger transport. The truck involved in the incident was reportedly overloaded, as it was carrying more passengers than its capacity, along with a horse.

Official statements

District Magistrate Shimla said, 'The rescue operation was completed swiftly, and all injured have been hospitalized. We are ensuring that the best possible medical treatment is provided. An inquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility for the accident.'

Eyewitnesses said the truck was moving at high speed before it crashed. 'We heard a loud noise and saw the truck falling down. It was a horrific scene,' said a local resident who participated in the rescue.

The injured include 12 men and 6 women, all members of the band party. The mare also sustained injuries but is being treated by a veterinary team.

Impact and aftermath

The accident has caused a sense of shock among the local community and the families of the victims. The wedding function for which the band party was headed has been cancelled as a mark of respect.

Authorities have urged transporters to ensure strict compliance with safety norms, especially during the monsoon season when roads are slippery and visibility is low. The state government has announced a high-level probe into the incident to prevent such tragedies in the future.
