Satellite Imaging to Unearth Lakkundi’s Hidden Heritage

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Karnataka government is set to use satellite imaging technology to uncover the buried heritage of Lakkundi, a historic town renowned for its ancient temples and architectural marvels. The announcement was made by the state’s tourism minister, who emphasized the potential of this technology to reveal hidden structures and artifacts beneath the surface.

Unearthing History with Technology

The satellite imaging project aims to map the subsurface of Lakkundi, which is believed to hold remnants of a glorious past dating back to the Chalukya and Hoysala periods. By employing advanced remote sensing techniques, archaeologists hope to identify buried temples, step wells, and other structures without invasive digging. This non-destructive approach will preserve the site while providing valuable insights into its historical layout.

UNESCO World Heritage Bid

In parallel, the tourism department is preparing a proposal to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for Lakkundi. The minister stated that the proposal will highlight the town’s unique architectural heritage, including its intricately carved temples and the famous Brahma Jinalaya, a Jain basti. If successful, Lakkundi would join the ranks of other UNESCO-listed sites in Karnataka, such as Hampi and Pattadakal.

The initiative has garnered support from historians and heritage enthusiasts, who believe that satellite imaging could revolutionize the study of ancient sites in India. The project is expected to commence within the next few months, with results being shared with the public through exhibitions and digital platforms.

Lakkundi, located in Gadag district, is already a popular tourist destination, but the new efforts aim to boost its global recognition. The minister urged local communities to participate in preserving this cultural treasure, emphasizing that heritage conservation is a collective responsibility.
