Navi Mumbai: In a tragic incident on Saturday, three minor girls drowned while bathing in a pond in Jasai village, Uran taluka. The victims were identified as Rehana Ramzan Parveen (8), Raveena Ramzan Parveen (7), and Soumya Kanhaiya Prajapati (13). The siblings were daughters of Shakala Mohammed Ramzan Khadim Mansoori (35), who accompanied them to the pond along with Soumya, the daughter of a neighbour.
Sequence of Events
According to Hanif Mulani, senior inspector of Uran police, Shakala Mansoori initially went to the pond around 11 am to wash clothes. Due to a water supply shortage in their chawl for the past two days, she returned to the pond around 2:30 pm with her two daughters and the neighbour's daughter for bathing. As they entered the pond, they underestimated its depth and began gasping for breath.
Rescue Attempt
A local villager, Mohammad Munna Qureshi, who was grazing goats nearby, heard the woman's cries for help. Unable to swim himself, he alerted another villager, Prashant Mhatre (38), who was passing by. Mhatre immediately dived into the pond and brought Shakala to shore. Upon learning that three girls were still in the water, he searched and brought them to the shore within two minutes. However, they were unconscious due to water intake through the nose and mouth.
Medical Response
The three girls were rushed to Indira Gandhi Rural Government Hospital in Uran, where doctors declared them brought dead. After completing formalities, the bodies were handed over to their parents for final rites. Uran police have registered an accidental death report.
