Travis Kelce Becomes Minority Investor in Cleveland Guardians MLB Team
Travis Kelce Invests in Cleveland Guardians MLB Team

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has officially become a minority investor in Major League Baseball's Cleveland Guardians, confirming the move during an interview with ESPN. The three-time Super Bowl champion, who grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, emphasized the personal significance of investing in the team he supported throughout his childhood.

Kelce's Deep Connection to Cleveland

"I have so much love for this city," Kelce told ESPN. "I say it all the time: I'm just a kid from the Heights living the dream. I credit every good thing in my life to Cleveland and being raised here with the values and the people and the work ethic. Cleveland Heights is such a diverse and dynamic place. Every friend, neighbor, teacher and teammate, they all made me the man I am today. It just fueled such a deep appreciation for life and community and service. That mentality of Cleveland against the world runs deep."

Kelce added that observing successful sporting organizations during his NFL career influenced his interest in sports ownership and organizational culture. "I've been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture," Kelce said. "Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I'm here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can."

Guardians Ownership Value Rises Sharply Since 2022 Investment Restructuring

According to ESPN, the Guardians are currently valued at approximately $1.7 billion, representing a major increase from the franchise’s estimated $1 billion valuation in 2022. That same year, lead minority owner David Blitzer purchased a stake in the organization that included a pathway toward eventual majority ownership. Kelce was reportedly brought into the Guardians ownership group through Blitzer, who also serves as co-owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL franchise New Jersey Devils. Blitzer’s pathway toward majority ownership of the Guardians could reportedly be exercised as early as after the 2027 MLB season.

The Cleveland franchise officially rebranded from the Indians to the Guardians in 2022 and currently sits top of the American League Central division after also winning the division during each of the previous two seasons.

Friendly Rivalry with Patrick Mahomes

Kelce acknowledged that Cleveland’s current position above the Kansas City Royals would likely become a topic of conversation inside the Chiefs locker room, particularly with teammate Patrick Mahomes already owning a minority stake in the Royals organization. "We're both as competitive as it gets, so you know there will be some bragging rights on the line when we play our division games," Kelce told ESPN. "But I really have a lot of respect for the Royals and their organization. It was a fun time in Kansas City cheering them on for their World Series win in 2015."

Baseball Once Appeared Kelce’s Clearest Route Toward Professional Sport

Long before becoming one of the NFL’s most successful tight ends, Kelce was considered among the strongest high school baseball prospects in the Cleveland metropolitan area. During his senior season in 2008, Kelce reportedly hit .588 with six home runs while developing a reputation as an athletic outfielder possessing speed, power and a strong throwing arm. He later continued playing summer baseball before ultimately committing to football at the University of Cincinnati.

Kelce told ESPN that his connection to Cleveland baseball had been shaped during the franchise’s hugely successful 1990s era, when the team won five consecutive American League Central titles and became one of baseball’s strongest teams. "There was nothing like Cleveland baseball in the '90s," Kelce said. "That's just a core memory for me. Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Jim Thome, Sandy Alomar Jr., the list goes on, and I admire how they just continue to pour into this city and this game. It's something that resonates with me, giving back to the places and the people that gave so much to you."

Kelce also recalled traveling downtown with his father, Ed Kelce, using Cleveland’s rapid-transit light rail system to attend games and keep score together during childhood.

Kelce Continues Rapidly Expanding Investment Portfolio Beyond NFL Career

The Guardians investment marks the latest addition to Kelce’s growing business and sports ownership portfolio outside football. Kelce and Mahomes previously joined the ownership group of Alpine Formula 1 team in 2023 alongside golfer Rory McIlroy and heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The Chiefs tight end also reportedly holds ownership stakes in an amusement park company, a mattress business, a beer company, a restaurant venture and his increasingly lucrative podcast business.

Kelce’s investment further continues a growing trend involving active athletes purchasing minority stakes in professional baseball organizations. According to ESPN, other current athletes holding ownership positions in MLB franchises include LeBron James with the Boston Red Sox, Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Milwaukee Brewers and Cade Cunningham with the Texas Rangers.

Kelce Expected to Enter Final Phase of NFL Career with Chiefs

The investment arrives while Kelce continues preparing for what is widely expected to be the closing years of his NFL career with the Chiefs. The 36-year-old signed a new contract extension with Kansas City following the 2025 season after previously spending consecutive offseasons considering his long-term future in football.

Kelce appeared in all 17 games during the 2025 NFL campaign, recording 76 receptions for 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Those 76 catches represented his lowest single-season total since 2015, although Kansas City endured a difficult season overall after Mahomes missed the closing stages because of a left knee injury. The Chiefs eventually finished the season with a 6-11 record.

Away from football, Kelce has continued attracting enormous public attention alongside fiancée Taylor Swift. Last week, Kelce and Swift attended Game 3 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals in Cleveland, where they watched the Cavaliers lose to the New York Knicks as the series ended in a sweep.
