US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified as the global second-in-command of the Islamic State group, was killed in a joint operation by American and Nigerian forces. In a statement, Trump described the mission as a "meticulously planned and very complex" effort carried out at his direction.
Operation Details
Trump stated via Truth Social: "Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield." He noted that al-Minuki had been tracked through intelligence sources despite attempting to hide in Africa.
Impact on ISIS
The US president emphasized that al-Minuki played a role in planning operations targeting Americans and destabilizing parts of Africa. "With his removal, ISIS's global operation is greatly diminished," Trump added. He claimed that al-Minuki thought he could hide in Africa but was unaware of the intelligence network monitoring his activities.
Security Context in Nigeria
Nigeria continues to face multiple security challenges, especially in its northern regions, where an insurgency has persisted for over two decades. In February, the United States deployed troops to the West African nation to advise and support Nigerian forces in tackling insecurity. Two major Islamic State-linked militant groups are active in the country: the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), primarily operating in the northeast, and Lakurawa, an ISIS-affiliated group that has attacked villages in northwestern and northcentral states.
This joint operation marks a significant step in counterterrorism efforts in the region, weakening the global network of the Islamic State.
