Three people were killed in lightning strikes as a severe thunderstorm battered North Karnataka and coastal districts on Sunday evening. The downpour brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat across the region.
Lightning Fatalities Reported
According to officials, three individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes in separate incidents across North Karnataka. The victims were reportedly caught outdoors when the sudden storm struck. Authorities have urged residents to take precautions during thunderstorms and avoid open areas.
Heavy Rain and Waterlogging
The thunderstorm also caused heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several low-lying areas. Motor vehicles were seen navigating flooded roads, including the Indira Glass House Road in Hubballi, which was submerged under knee-deep water. Commuters faced difficulties as traffic moved slowly through the inundated streets.
Respite from Heat
Despite the casualties and disruptions, the evening showers brought down temperatures significantly, providing relief to residents who had been enduring intense heat over the past weeks. The meteorological department has forecast more thundershowers in the coming days, with conditions likely to remain cloudy.
Precautionary Measures
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has advised people to stay indoors during storms, avoid using electrical appliances, and refrain from sheltering under trees. Farmers have been cautioned against working in fields during lightning activity.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for coastal and interior districts, predicting further thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Authorities are on alert to handle any emergency situations arising from the inclement weather.
