Three people have died in lightning strikes as unseasonal rains continue to batter parts of Karnataka. Several heads of livestock also perished in lightning strikes in various parts of the state, including Yadgir and Hassan districts.
Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms
The region experienced sharp showers coupled with heightened thunder activity in the early hours of Wednesday. The Totnalli Mahanteshwar Mutt in Sedam taluk was submerged following flash floods in a stream. The unseasonal rains have caused widespread disruption, with waterlogging reported in low-lying areas and roads inundated.
Impact on Agriculture and Livestock
Farmers have suffered significant losses as standing crops were damaged in the downpour. Livestock owners reported the death of cattle due to lightning strikes, adding to the distress. Officials have advised people to stay indoors and avoid open fields during thunderstorms.
Government Response
The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has been put on alert. Relief teams have been deployed to affected areas to assess damage and provide assistance. Authorities are also monitoring river levels to prevent further flooding.
The unseasonal rains, attributed to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, are expected to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours. Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to take precautions and follow safety guidelines.
