4.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Silchar, Triggering Brief Panic
A 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted areas around Silchar in Cachar district on Sunday morning, causing brief panic among residents. The tremor was felt at 9:21am, according to initial reports, with the epicentre located at Irongmara, approximately 19km from Silchar town.
Shallow Depth Intensifies Tremors
Officials confirmed that the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of about 5km below the surface. This shallow nature made the tremors more strongly felt in areas close to the epicentre, leading to noticeable vibrations reported by residents in and around the epicentral zone.
Experts explained that shallow earthquakes typically cause sharper surface-level shaking compared to deeper ones of similar magnitude. This phenomenon contributed to the heightened sense of alarm during the event.
