An American official was mysteriously found dead in a hotel in Myanmar, and a Thai woman has been detained by local police in connection with the investigation. Although the incident occurred a few weeks ago, the State Department has now confirmed the death and stated that it will not disclose any additional details about the case.
State Department's Statement
“Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time,” the State Department said in an emailed reply to questions from The Associated Press.
Details from Diplomatic Sources
According to three individuals in the diplomatic community in Myanmar, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the case, the man was found dead approximately two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel.
The hotel, which offers long-term rentals, is popular among diplomats, businesspeople, and other international visitors. It is located about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the American Embassy.
Thai Authorities Remain Silent
The Thai Embassy in Yangon and Thailand's Foreign Ministry also declined to comment on whether they had provided consular support to the suspect or to offer any other information. The manager of the Sakura hotel also refused to comment when contacted by the agency.
