The Atal Tunnel, a marvel of engineering in the Himalayas, stands as a testament to the visionary leadership and unwavering determination of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, said Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Saturday. Speaking at an event in Manali, the Governor emphasized that the tunnel, which connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley, is not just a infrastructure project but a symbol of the nation's progress and commitment to border development.
Strategic and Economic Significance
The Governor highlighted the tunnel's strategic importance, noting that it reduces the distance between Manali and Keylong by 46 kilometers and saves travel time by approximately 4-5 hours. This all-weather tunnel under the Rohtang Pass ensures connectivity to the Ladakh region, facilitating faster movement of troops and supplies. Economically, the tunnel has boosted tourism and trade in the region, with a significant increase in tourist arrivals to Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh.
Vajpayee's Vision Realized
Shukla recalled Vajpayee's vision for a tunnel under Rohtang Pass, which was announced in 2000. Despite numerous challenges, the project was completed in 2020, becoming the longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet in the world. The Governor praised the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for executing the project with precision and dedication.
The Governor also urged the youth to draw inspiration from Vajpayee's leadership and work towards the nation's development. He stressed that the tunnel exemplifies how determination can overcome geographical hurdles. The event was attended by local officials and residents, who lauded the government's efforts in improving infrastructure in the region.
