In anticipation of Bakrid, the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) executed a targeted operation on Saturday to dismantle unauthorised sheep and goat market structures across its jurisdiction. The drive focused on removing temporary sheds, tarpaulin enclosures, iron barricades, and other illegal setups that had been erected on public roads, footpaths, government land, and along storm water drains.
Coordinated Effort
The operation involved a collaborative effort from multiple departments within the corporation, including animal husbandry, health, and engineering, alongside local police personnel. The entire initiative was spearheaded by BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar. According to a press release issued by BNCC, many traders had been conducting business without obtaining the necessary permissions, despite prior warnings and notices served to them.
Enforcement and Cooperation
Authorities utilised heavy machinery to dismantle the illegal structures. In certain areas, the public demonstrated cooperation by voluntarily removing their setups before the enforcement teams arrived. Officials emphasised that the primary objectives of the drive were to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow, maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the city, and uphold animal welfare standards during the festive period.
Regulatory Measures
BNCC reiterated that all livestock trading activities must be confined to authorised and designated locations. The corporation warned that strict legal action would be taken against any violators who continue to flout the rules. Citizens were also urged to celebrate the festival responsibly, adhering to civic norms and regulations.
