Canada's High Commissioner to India, Chris Cotter, met with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Canada and Karnataka, particularly in areas of trade, investment, and education.
Discussions on Trade and Investment
During the meeting, both leaders discussed opportunities for enhancing trade and investment flows. Karnataka, known for its robust IT and biotechnology sectors, offers significant potential for Canadian companies. Cotter highlighted Canada's interest in collaborating with Karnataka in clean technology, aerospace, and agri-food processing.
Education and Skill Development
Another key area of discussion was education and skill development. The High Commissioner emphasized the importance of student exchanges and research collaborations between Canadian and Karnataka institutions. Currently, over 10,000 students from Karnataka are studying in Canada, and both sides expressed a desire to increase this number.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured the High Commissioner of the state government's support for Canadian investments and welcomed greater cooperation in higher education. He also invited Canadian companies to explore opportunities in Karnataka's industrial corridors and smart city projects.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to further dialogue and the signing of a memorandum of understanding in the coming months to formalize cooperation in key sectors.
