China-North Korea Passenger Train Services Resume After Six-Year Pandemic Hiatus
Passenger train services between China and North Korea officially resumed on Thursday, marking the restoration of a crucial cross-border transport link that had been suspended for six years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This significant development comes as North Korea gradually reopens its borders, contrasting with China's earlier full reopening post-pandemic.
Details of the Restored Train Services
According to China Railway, the resumed services include two key routes. Trains between Beijing and Pyongyang will operate four times a week, while another service connecting the Chinese border city of Dandong with Pyongyang will run daily. International travelers are permitted on specific carriages of the Beijing–Pyongyang train, with tickets currently available only to individuals holding valid visas.
This group primarily consists of Chinese citizens working or studying in North Korea, as well as North Koreans who need to travel abroad for work, study, or family visits. Reports from Reuters indicate that tickets for the inaugural train departing on Thursday have already sold out, with passengers including entrepreneurs, government officials, and journalists.
Context and Implications for Tourism and Diplomacy
The resumption of these train services is seen as a vital step in promoting people-to-people exchanges between the two nations. A spokesperson from the Chinese foreign ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining regular passenger train services for fostering bilateral relations. Prior to the pandemic, Chinese tourists constituted a significant portion of foreign visitors to North Korea, but the country closed its borders in early 2020 as a precautionary measure.
Since 2024, North Korea has been slowly reopening, announcing various projects aimed at revitalizing its tourism sector. The country only began allowing a limited number of tourists to enter from 2024, reflecting a cautious approach compared to China's swift post-pandemic recovery. This gradual reopening aligns with efforts to boost economic and cultural ties through enhanced connectivity.
The restoration of train services not only facilitates travel but also symbolizes a step toward normalizing cross-border interactions in the region. As both countries navigate post-pandemic realities, this development could pave the way for increased cooperation and exchange in the coming years.
