CMRL Casts Final U-Girder for Phase-2 Corridor-5

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved a significant milestone by completing the casting of the final U-girder required for the Corridor-5 elevated section of its Phase-2 project. The last 19.5-meter-long U-girder, intended for the Adambakkam metro station, was cast at a city casting yard. This brings the total number of U-girders produced for this package to 824.

Massive Casting Yard Operations

According to CMRL, the 43-acre casting yard manufactured precast components necessary for the 13.1-kilometer elevated viaduct and its associated stations on Corridor-5. A total of 5,836 precast elements were cast using approximately 1.2 lakh cubic meters of concrete. The project involved automated station U-girder mould operations integrated with hydraulic systems to streamline casting activities.

Varied U-Girder Specifications

The package included casting U-girders ranging in length from 8.9 meters to 33.3 meters. The longest U-girder cast under the project weighed an impressive 225 tonnes. Officials from CMRL, consultant AEON, and contractor L&T were present during the completion of the final U-girder casting, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this achievement.
