The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been assigned a new mission in Manipur following its successful operations against Maoists in other parts of the country. Dubbed 'Mission Manipur', the initiative aims to bolster security in the northeastern state, which has been grappling with insurgency and ethnic tensions.
CoBRA Battalions Deployed
A senior officer in the CRPF confirmed to Deccan Herald that CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalions are being deployed as part of this mission. Each CoBRA battalion comprises nearly 1,000 personnel equipped with advanced weapons and specialized gadgets. These commandos are trained for jungle warfare and counter-insurgency operations, making them ideal for the challenging terrain of Manipur.
Strategic Importance
The deployment comes at a critical time when Manipur is witnessing heightened security concerns. The CRPF's experience in combating Maoist insurgency in states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand is expected to be leveraged in Manipur. The force has been lauded for its effective strategies and minimal collateral damage in previous operations.
- Enhanced Surveillance: CoBRA units will use drones and other surveillance technology to monitor sensitive areas.
- Community Engagement: The mission also includes outreach programs to win local support and gather intelligence.
- Inter-Agency Coordination: CRPF will work closely with state police and the Indian Army to ensure a unified approach.
The CRPF officer emphasized that the mission is not just about combat but also about building trust with the local population. 'We aim to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur through a combination of firm action against insurgents and developmental initiatives,' the officer said.
This development marks a significant shift in the CRPF's operational focus, as it now takes on a dual role of counter-insurgency and peacekeeping in one of India's most volatile regions.
